Alexander McQueen

alexander-mcqueen.jpgAlexander McQueen CBE was born as Lee Alexander McQueen on 17th March 1969 in East London and attended Rokeby school. He is one of the most influential English fashion designers in the world.

McQueen is the son of a taxi driver and he started out making dresses for his three sisters at a young age. After school he landed himself an apprenticeship with Savile Row tailors Anderson and Shepherd and continued to work for different taylors at Savile Row before travelling to Italy and working for Romeo Gigli. When McQueen returned to London he applied to London’s most prestigious fashion school, Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design to work as a pattern cutter tutor. He was persuaded to enrol as a student and graduated in 1991. In 1996 McQueen was instated as head designer at Givenchy. He worked there until 2001. He currently has partnerships with Gucci and Puma alongside his own line of clothes and perfume.

McQueen is one of the youngest designers to achieve the title “British Designer of the Year” he went on to win this award four times between 1996 and 2003. He has also been awarded the CBE, as well as being named International Designer of the Year at the Council of Fashion Designer Awards.
